Workingman’s Death
Do we mean by work is not just any activity for a living, but that drudgery that comes with considerable commitment and just as much strain on the body, it has quickly an image of tremendous effort, sweat and dirt in mind. Precisely this also shows us the documentary Workingman’s Death, and even more: it is reflected by the appearance of the heavy lifting in different regions of the world the value of working in itself, an issue given the enormous unemployment and strategies for dealing with in our society is constantly gaining in importance.
The reputation and the reality of work and the workers have changed considerably over the course of history and the current traces this development goes to the Austrian filmmaker Michael Glawogger theorize into five different companies, rather than less, at directly show with dramatic ruthlessness, as the hardest physical work designed what she does with the people and the attitude to adopt towards their own workers.
Workingman’s Death is divided into five chapters with an epilogue, where the first hero, begins with a review of the legendary Soviet miner Aleksei Stachanov, who by his almost incredible use in 1935 for “heroes of the Working appointed “was what drew some fame and a political career for him after her. Recent Finally comes the epilogue, which takes place in Duisburg in the Ruhr area where the blast furnaces once pulsed and now covers a wide-scale theme park, an exit that concern us in our own society and can be thoughtfully back.
Workingman ’s death has been shown internationally at several festivals and won several awards, and his fascination lies, among other things due to the fact that it is a documentation of a seemingly prosaic subject, which still captivates the audience in a strange way, prejudice and sometimes scare too can . The free jazz of John Zorn accompanies the images hardworking people strongly atmospheric, without attempting a bribe as a harmonizing emotion.
Director Michael Glawogger, who already has both documentaries, such as mega-cities in 1998, and also directed feature films, most recently Slumming, which was screened in competition at this year’s Berlinale, abandoned the concept of Workingman’s Death of a conscious practical proposition. His presentation, which he also wrote the screenplay, is complemented by the thrifty, sober commentary, while the statements are translated from the original languages of the workers. Glawogger’s focus is to present the work in detail as a constantly recurring process of painstaking work, without seeking therein a meaning other than the workers themselves have attached. These generate the massive images of dust, smoke and fire, an almost poetic symbolism that links the episodes together. These stand in stark contrast to the sculptural realism that makes the gravity of this work quite sensibly felt. The activity of the cameraman Wolfgang Thaler apparently extends even to the most difficult venues in the category of heavy work, while nevertheless characterized by a high degree of craftsmanship.
On leaving the cinema will be some people – but exhausted from Watch the drudgery and empathy – to be happy about having to earn his living not in this way, but only evil tongues may claim that Workingman’s Death certainly qualify as deadly argument of the employers in local labor disputes would be.
