White Diamond

More and more, has Werner Herzog in the course of recent years refocused on the documentary, after only occasional excursions into the movie like Invincible (2002) increasingly has become his real refuge. Already after the last legendary collaboration with Klaus Kinski, 1987 in Cobra Verde was merciless critics accused him of being burned out, which should not face the ordeal of filming in the jungle and the egomaniacal personality of its lead actor more surprising. It subsequently emerged as documentary My Best Fiend (1999) or Wheel of Time (2003), the success of current movies far exceeded. With his latest work of White Diamond Duke now returns to the jungle and shows images of breathtaking beauty, who had not seen so far on the screen.

A trip not only in the majestic scenery of the jungle, but in the past, for the journey undertaken by Duke along with the British aerospace engineer Dr. Graham Dorrington, also results in the past. Ten years ago, Dorrington had constructed an airship called the “White Diamond”, which he, together with the German animal and nature filmmaker Dieter Plage ventured a spectacular expedition. But the construction was not yet mature and there was a catastrophic incident: The airship was caught in the crown of a 50-meter-high tree, broke apart and the cameraman fell to the ground, badly injured but survived initially. Carry away But when you try the severely wounded, died of a shock from which Dorrington has never quite recovered.

Succeeded in bringing Werner Herzog, to the designer to build a new, improved airship with which the two share a daring journey into the jungles of Guyana. For Dorrington, it is not just a journey into a real landscape, but also the exploration of psychological trauma, are addressed in the film, as well as the history of ballooning and the contemplative beauty of nature. A fascinating adventure and moving in the truest sense of the word document of a journey into the heart of things.
