The Good Shepherd

Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) is an American patriot, as he stands in the book: blessed diligent, industrious, honest and with that unshakable faith in the American values upon which rests the success of the United States. Already during his studies at the elite Yale University in 1939, he joined the secret society Skull & Bones, recruited from the future elite of the country. At that time the intelligence of the young man’s career began, initially in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), for which he spied on his teaching at the university, then later in the successor organization, the Central Intelligence Service (CIA), which is established in 1947 . Thanks to its impeccable lifestyle Wilson rises quickly within the organization and became one of the most important men of the CIA.

But the inexorable rise of a high price from his family, his wife Margaret (Angelina Jolie) and his beloved has son (Eddie Redmayne) wins the careerist with a little more difficult. Moreover, the rampant paranoia charged in the dawning days of the Cold War, any form of interpersonal relationships difficult. In an era in which evil lurks in the guise of Communism seems on every street corner and in the fraud and deception is so common as brushing teeth in the morning, Edward developed paranoid traits that nothing and no one to hold. The once good family man mutated into a cold, obsessive and ultimately deeply disturbed man. Before his suspicions and the resulting consequences is not even his own family safe, so that Wilson eventually only one person familiar with his mentor, General Sullivan (Robert De Niro) …

Robert De Niro’s second feature film The Good Shepherd / The Good Shepherd to A Bronx Tale catapults the mimes now finally as a filmmaker in the first division. His fictional story of the CIA – robot because it has never been this Edward Wilson – tells the story of the secret service using the CV of one of the main actors, and designs so sovereign a genre picture, which covers the period from 1925 to 1961. A gripping, deeply human, richly complex and excellently staged piece of American history and a fascinating insight into the world of intelligence. Not unanstrengend, but worthwhile!
