The fact that Mike Leigh is not the almost unconditional cheerful tone of his latest film Happy-Go-Lucky is entering, it already does the first scene no doubt: we see a bitter older woman (Imelda Staunton), who suffers from chronic insomnia and refuses at the same time, opposite admit the treating pregnant doctor that she somewhat depressed. That this is so, we see too clearly on her pinched face, the apparent dominance, which they summon to hinauszuschreien not their misery and their misfortune loudly. But it is not this patient, whose way Mike Leigh pursued, but above all their psychologist Gerri (Ruth Sheen) and her husband Tom (Jim Broadbent), who works as a geologist. The two are apparently an outrageously happy couple early sixties, which takes care of warmth and affection to the many small problems and concerns of their numerous friends. You are an island of peace and satisfaction in an ocean of misery and of small and big needs. For example, there is the secretary Mary (Leslie Manville), a ditzy woman in her early forties, the excited chatter and hasty dash down of several glasses of wine over the course of the film only with difficulty covered their depression, which comes mainly from their loneliness. She has found a divorce and a relationship with a married older man behind him, trying desperately, but still the right man. And that frightens not even hesitate, Joe (Oliver Maltman), suit dig for about ten years younger son of Gerri and Tom, who makes her quite obvious overtures skillfully with stoic composure not return. When Ken (Peter Wight), another friend from the circle to the psychologist and the geologist, it would have on the other hand the best chance to land, but the thick, chain-smoking and some rotten man who enjoys time T-shirts with the motto “Less thinking , more drinking ‘claims that unfortunately is not her type at all. And so now it is they who evades his clumsy flirtations and his attempted embrace. However, connecting the two more, as Mary likes to admit: If we look at their faces and looks at their behavior, is plain to see how much they remember that time is running against them, they will probably be alone and unhappy. Joe contrast to his love life, his parents are already worried there, but still at some point his luck, he meets the occupational therapist Katie, who immediately understands very well with Gerri and Tom and with possibly the quiet happiness of his Parents may be repeated. (# Divided) in the four seasons spring, summer, autumn and winter Mike Leigh describes his heartrending film Another Year for all through its outstanding cast and a fine tuned balance between tragedy and comedy, laconic cynicism and great empathy his characters, the fragility of happiness, the almost seemingly unfair juxtaposition of happiness and despair, loneliness and the threat to flee to the alcohol, the inevitability of aging and approaching death. As in Happy-Go-Lucky, our sympathies wholly on the side of the two protagonists, with whom we worry about that on their luck is not the shadow of fate might. In the end we see Mary, look at her face and see that they realized that it does what it wants (just a little bit of luck), probably never will reach. It is the touching finale of a film full of smart and true observations about life and about how dependent we have condemned them to be loved. Or not. (Joachim Kurz)
