The very beginning of Oliver Schmitz ‘Film Life, Above All / Le Secret de Chanda, a South African production with German participation, had guessed that this would be no light fare. Instead of going to school, the twelve-year Chanda (Khomotso Manyaka take) the heavy going to the funeral director, as just her little sister Sarah died and her mother (Lerato Mvelase) grief not in a position to take care of the funeral arrangements. Since money is tight and her stepfather, with whom the mother has other children, a drifter and womanizer, is the girl has to take care of everything themselves now, especially since the mother apparently suffering from grief and always shows clearer signs of decay. By Chanda matures in a horrible suspicion – it may be that the mother is ill with AIDS? Out of shame from the prying neighbors and because of poverty, the family dares not have to visit the doctor. And emerges as the father after several months of absence, also marked by illness and emaciated suddenly back to shortly after finally disappearing from the scene, it is clear that Chanda has been no one more soon will be out of her friend Esther (Keaobaka Makanyane). But their lifestyle fits neither the neighbor stern Aunt Lizbet (Tinah Mnumzana) nor the community that has closed to the realities of life in the Township eyes and prefer refuge in superstition, and gossip. Was celebrated with a standing ovation in Cannes in the “Un certain regard” had known in South Africa located drama, the little actress Khomotso Manyaka before the start of a performance, how happy she was, in Cannes to be present. If they had known what applause would rise after the end of the screening process, their feelings of happiness would certainly have known no bounds. A small discovery, as they do in Cannes and over again – and perhaps the most poignant moment in the life of gambling Khomotso Manyaka. In view of the yachts and luxury cars, which can be seen on the Croisette and the beaches and all the important people here operate permanently “serious bizness,” recalls one a film like Life, Above All impressively out what it is here in Cannes also and above all, is – to real life stories that open their eyes to other worlds.
