has with the Experiment and Downfall, Oliver Hirschbiegel made a name and strongly suggested for the international film business, it was that you willing to bet that his road now lead straight to Hollywood and he would then continue his career. And indeed, the director presented with invasion (2007), first one realized in the U.S. project, but still remaining both with the critics and the audience behind the high expectations. With his new film, Five Minutes of Heaven Hirschbiegel is now returning to Europe, and clearly shows that he has forgotten nothing and despite the flops that he still controls his craft masterful. The film also marks a return to his old strengths – it is above all the actors leadership and his unerring sense of the depths of the human soul that make his new work at a cinema experience of the ordinary. Northern Ireland in 1975: Lurgan is a small hole somewhere in Ulster. But here are the effects of civil war between the Irish Catholic IRA and the Protestant-unionist UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force to feel) significantly. The 17-year-old Alistair Little (Mark Davidson) is a normal adolescent, but how many of his friends he can not escape the daily violence and hatred. The young person is hungry for recognition and explains therefore willing to make friends with his first “shot”. What at first harmless, almost playful sounds is nothing but a cowardly political murder of a Catholic teenager who had been expelled threats against the UVF. Although the attempt succeeds, but Alistair is observed here by Joe Griffin (Kevin O’Neill), the little brother of the murdered man, who must watch helplessly as James dies hit by three bullets. 30 years later, Joe and Alistair meet again. Meanwhile, much has changed: Alistair was for his murder of James for 12 years in prison and has subsequently renounced violence, the civil war in Northern Ireland is officially over, it has returned to peace in Ulster. Nevertheless, the emotional wounds are still there, the unimaginable mutual atrocities have poisoned the atmosphere. In a television program is intended to Alistair, the purified killer, and Joe, the brother of the victim, symbolically shake hands and reconcile with each other. Although Joe agrees, he can not forget the whole thing so easy. And that is next to the mourning for his brother mainly to two factors: First, it can not shake the feeling that Alistair has caught his act, despite better than himself as a repentant sinner, and now active pacifist is the one that is already Art media star, while Joe ekes out to be a miserable existence. In addition, Joe has got drummed since the murder of his mother’s guilt, he was able to prevent a then 11-year-old killing his brother in any way. And so it is no wonder that Joe on the way to the staged reconciliation with him carries a knife, which he wants Alistair hunt in the heart. But it all comes differently than planned … (# Confident) Five Minutes of Heaven both a haunting study of hatred, violence and reconciliation, as well as a furious battle between two men who are still vexed by the past, even though they want nothing more than their (souls) peace. Nevertheless, Five Minutes of Heaven is much more than a vile revenge drama with a clearly defined role assignments. Although the film knowledgeable and authentic refers to the Northern Ireland conflict, one could the events transferred easily to other places, was on the former Yugoslavia, in the Basque country, Rwanda and all the other countries where the people involved in a devastating civil war. Does that Hirschbiegel’s largely fictional story at the same time as atmospheric coherent description of the Northern Ireland conflict and as a parable about the global issues of guilt and atonement, crime and reconciliation is one of the many strengths of this haunting film. In addition, it is primarily the two main people who carry the film – both in form of the two young actors Mark Davidson and Kevin O’Neill as well as in their “adult” counterparts Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt. In Five Minutes of Heaven, Oliver Hirschbiegel once again his extraordinary feel for the varied psychological mechanisms to the test and reveals his fine talent for actor management and leinwandgerechte images that make a really small story big screen. The fully deserved directing award at Sundance Film Festival was the reward for this extraordinary film. Welcome back, Mr. Hirschbiegel! (Joachim Kurz)
