  Difficulties with the Chinese censorship authorities could not prevent the performance of the only Asian competition entry, Summer Palace, at the Cannes Film Festival. The Chinese censors so far refused to release required for an international performance on the grounds that it had submitted a copy of “fuzzy” and the sound “bad”, so that you can not judge the film. Whether the film is now actually “officially” can participate in the competition, is thus still in the stars. However, this is not the first time that director Lou Ye has such problems with the authorities in his homeland. For his film, Suzhou River (2000), which also ran without official approval at international festivals, he regained a two-year prohibition.

The film follows its protagonist in the years 1987 to 2001. The beautiful Yu Hong (Hao Lei) leaves her village to study in Beijing. But their relationship develops against the backdrop of political unrest, as more and more students join protests and demand by the Chinese rulers of democracy and freedom. The film does not end with the suppressed uprising in Tiananmen Square, but with the direct confrontation with the longed-for Western values and ways of thinking.

Certainly also fueled by the Chinese censorship efforts Summer Palace enjoys a wide press coverage. Again and again highlighted the great actress Hao Lei. Grows here as competition for the Chinese acting sizes Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi, this year a member of the jury at Cannes approached?

The Hollywood Reporter praised Hao Leis performance, however, criticized the film as too long. Variety suggests the same line.
