Shadows of Time

What seems at first glance like a social drama of Bollywood, turns out on closer inspection as a new trick of the many already advertised as a German wunderkind director Oscar winner Florian Gallenberger. After Quiero Ser, who played in Mexico, abducted Gallenberger the public now to Calcutta, in the period before the independence of the subcontinent.

In a carpet factory near Calcutta, the 11-year-old Ravi working (as a child: Sikandar Agarwal) and the somewhat younger Masha (The Tumpa). Quickly make friends with the two children to do such a thing as a delicate and innocent love, the first in her life, she will never let go. Ravi wants as quickly as possible out of the factory, to finally lead a normal life. And of course, he dreams that Masha is an integral part of this life. This, however, he must work hard to redeem himself by the owner of the factory.

But then fate strikes cruel, because Ravi’s boss intends to sell to a girl Masha dealers. Ravi sacrifices all his savings in order to save his girlfriend that, with the result that he will not even come out now for years to come from the factory. Shortly before allowed to go Masha, expect the two children to wait for each other, Masha is waiting at every full moon in the largest Shiva temple in the city to Ravi, it is agreed upon. Only years later as a grown man can redeem Ravi and embarks on a search for Masha, but the two lovers to miss him. And what Ravi also does not know that Masha was cheated out of their money and ended up as a dancer in a brothel, which would necessarily prevent Ravi yet. When the two finally found, the situation has changed both, and it proves impossible to live out the still-existing love, too.

Florian Gallenberger saves in his first feature film not just with feelings that on many German viewers could contribute slightly irritating, because so much emotion in this country is quickly called into question or gentle smiles. Above all, the child lay actors and the darkly poetic images of Jurgen Jurges the love story give an almost metaphysical force, easily the film ponders next to love in general and about the futility of waiting and the opera-taking. However, it does not create Gallenberger at any time, the force of his narrative into the future of Life and Ravis Mashas salvage, where the film sometimes slips into the very formulaic Bollywood. However: virtuosic, sensual and uninhibited has juggled a long time no German director longer with the force of emotions, even at the risk of being derided as kitsch artist. Hats off for so much courage!
