Runaway Horse

For years, the stems, making holiday at Lake Constance – always spend Oberstudienrat Helmut (Ulrich Noethen) and his wife, Sabine (Katja Riemann) over the same apartment. This alone is a clear indication of the habits and routines that govern the marriage long ago. But you are out in good spirits and live quietly side by side, and it could probably go on forever. Sex has now become a foreign word, Sabine has apparently revealed her fate as a frustrated wife, and goes perhaps to the game for rare birds. But one day, suddenly comes a fresh wind in the sleepy holiday idyll, when the couple met in a beach Helmut’s old school friend Klaus (Ulrich Tukur), is accompanied by the young Helene (Petra Schmidt-Schaller). The lively, loud, swaggering Klaus is the exact opposite of the good Lord Study Council, and the two women separated more than a few years. From the frustration of the status quo and the novelty out unfolds an erotic dance and a tree-change-you game that will evaluate the current relations of a serious ordeal – Helmut feel to the charming, young Helen drawn and discovers that his desires and appetites are by no means dead, while at Sabine Klaus discovers that she too is still a desirable woman. But it also quickly became clear that these newly awakened emotions will lead to serious conflicts and disagreements, which eventually lead to an escalation even during an otherwise very stormy sailing on Lake Constance …

written almost 30 years ago, Martin has Walser’s novel Runaway Horse also lost none of your timeliness and timelessness. The crises in the middle of life, relationships, suffocating in the routines of everyday life, the emerging minute panic and the life lies, that’s all not a bit better today than then. But this is surely only one of the reasons why should have driven Rainer Kaufmann’s adaptation of the novel, the generations of German students in the despair that is working well. In particular merchant has found precisely in its film version, the right balance between faithfulness and its own profile – nothing here has drawn up, reciting, or tense, as is often common in other literary adaptations, but the film exudes a natural charm, where you can escape only with difficulty . This is mainly due to a glossy opened ensemble that blends just fine. The only point of criticism in an otherwise all-round successful staging are just some passages of dialogue that comes along then but a very little effort.

Runaway Horse was honored by the Film Review Board Wiesbaden with the expression “particular value”.
