The best stories are found on the street. Or right next door, the neighbors, which we often pass around. This is an experience that the two filmmakers Frankfurt Mischka Popp and Thomas miner in the course of her research for her film Mazel Tov certainly made often enough. Your film is dedicated to the Jewish Red Army veterans who fought in World War II against the Germans. After the opening of the Eastern bloc, many of them have emigrated to Germany and so landed in this way in Frankfurt am Main. There they were: stranded, often not the German language, full of stories and experiences that anyone interested and wanted to hear none. For when the Russian Jews, they not only recall the horror of the Holocaust, but also to the suffering of the Russian people during World War II, which paid between all the nations of the war, the highest toll. Every year on 9 May is in the Jewish community celebrated the day of liberation, recalling the end of the Second World War and the Terror of the Nazis. On this occasion, experience the Jewish veterans of the Red Army, a tribute – each of the former soldiers by name and gets called instead of the many medals that they proudly present for the occasion, a simple red rose given as a token of appreciation. It is a gesture full of simplicity, although the wrongs can not make us forget, but still a little can mitigate. Because they were forgotten, it has become accustomed to Jewish veterans in the post almost, in their home fared no much different from them. While other fighters were honored, many of them learned over time that their contribution to the “Great Patriotic War” after several years systematically concealed and small talk was – simply because of their Judaism. In their film Mazel Tov Mischka Popp and Thomas Bergmann just glimpsed it belongs and, taking a wonderful panorama of stories, and people brought to light that many have seen and experienced, and even in old age to step into a new world have ventured that is many of them still remained a stranger. Nevertheless, the courage of the old men and their unbroken optimism, despite some of their fate are truly an example – we should take a leaf out of it if we start to complain again. (Joachim Kurz)
