Love in the Time of Cholera

Gabriel Garcia Marquez ‘novel Love in the Time of Cholera is considered one of the most important literary works of the 20th Century in general and unfolds over a period of many decades, a love story that survives the time. The Briton Mike Newell, director of his label such different films as Donnie Brasco, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Mona Lisa Smile and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, has taken up with great effort, this century’s premises.

It’s the magic of a certain day in 1879, in which the poor telegraph messenger Florentino (Unax Ugalde, in later life Javier Bardem accepts the role) in the beautiful Fermina (Giovanna Mezzogiorno), a young woman love from a good, wealthy home. Florentions love is returned, but we suspect it already, that Ferminas father (John Leguizamo) is strictly against the misalliance. So the young woman has no other choice than to marry her lover, whom she had been accepted, rejected again. Instead, she marries Dr. Juvenal Urbino (Benjamin Bratt), a physician of reputation and fortune – much to the enthusiasm of her father and to the dismay of Florentinos. This console himself with other women and make a career, until he finally rises to the Director of the Caribbean shipping company. But even his 622 conquests can not change his love for Fermina. It was only when Dr. Urbino dies in an accident, he dares to audition again for Fermina, and confess his love for her, are now 51 years, passed away 9 months and 4 days …

Lack of detail and accuracy in dealing with The literary text can not really blame Mike Newell now, although we wonder at one point has been, why is a pop song by Shakira in a literature of this claim. Nevertheless, both the screenplay by Ronald Harwood, as well as the costumes, equipment and locations have been raised in the service of the template. The actor has made genuine team effort, but time and again proves to be the framework that Marquez has unfolded in its submission as too big, too powerful: Is it only knows to convince Javier Bardem, Giovanna Mezzogiorno while rarely in the charisma of the character Fermina heranreicht. For example, some aspects of the film succeeded may be, as a whole loses the flow of the narrative, the Marquez dominated like few others, of nowhere and proves once again that factory faithful and entertaining literary adaptations are among the most difficult challenges a filmmaker.
