France in 1562: Still the fierce battle rages between the Catholics and the Huguenots. Among the fighters for the Protestants is also the Comte de Chabannes (Lambert Wilson), but is becoming tired of fighting. When he accidentally kills a pregnant woman, he decides to lay down their arms and desert. From now on it is occupied by both sides with a spell – for the Catholics, he is therefore a persona non grata, because he has fought for the heretics, with the Huguenots, he is a deserter and traitor to his own cause. Thanks to the connections of his former pupil, Philippe, the Prince de Montpensier (Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet), Chabanne takes refuge at his court, and is witness to the power politics of those days when marriages never out of love, but above all for the purpose of maintaining power and the backup and be expansion of influence on the policy of France closed. This must also learn Marie de Mézières, the heiress of an ancient noble family and so vast land, which belongs to the Duc de Guise (Gaspard Ulliel) is inclined to this and promised a long time. For superior power out is the engagement by Marie’s father and this is now resolved as the new wife of the Prince of Montpensier installed. When this move shortly after the wedding night accomplished in public again in the war must, he confides to the equally beautiful and naive to the Comte de Chabannes Princess, which will make the young woman by means of lessons in Latin poetry and socially acceptable. Soon also succumbs to the innocent charm of the Huguenot Maries, which in turn still feels tender feelings for the Duc de Guise. And then there’s the Duc d’Anjou (Raphael Personnaz), the future King Henri III. Who falls in love at first sight also in the ravishing young woman … Based on a novel by Madame de Lafayette stands Bertrand Tavernier a genre picture of courtly intrigues and love affairs in light of the Huguenot wars. Who the intricacies of that bloody period in the history FRANCE is not familiar, the story, some aspects of the open only after the fact and after thorough reading. That would be quite get over, if history ham would grab at least emotionally. Despite all the turmoil of love, this is just not possible Tavernier – which in both its title character as well as the Comte de Chabannes, the real hero and narrator of the confusion in the court. That women in those days are not much more than maneuver in the power games of their fathers, is already known from several other movies and got the example in Sophia Coppola in Cannes a few years ago with whistles and boos thoughtful Marie Antoinetteauf as unusual as provocative manner shown. In such recalcitrance to wait for La Princesse de Montpensier, unfortunately in vain. Until the horribly naive lady finally should look to their own wishes and needs, the patience of the viewer with a number of brutal massacres, and the intricate maneuvers in the royal power structure is already stretched to the masses. Is drawn similarly weak and the Comte de Chabannes, who as resigned fighters and wise teacher knows after all the only real (albeit rather involuntary) laugh on his side when he and the emcee of a bad stage show, the quarreling lovers Marie and the Duc de Guise urges more rest and so that explicitly points to a moment of absolute disbelief. not strongly filmed battle scenes If there were, which broke the actions again and again, would probably hardly anyone who may wonder if, given the early time, the sheer length of this film and not very convincing main characters, much of the audience would be asleep gently. Honestly – you would not blame them can. (Joachim Kurz)
