John Rabe

John Rabe
               Genre: Biography, History
In each film, at least in every good, there is a central image, a scene that depicts the essence of the story impressively. In Florian Gallenberger’s film John Rabe, based on historical fact, this scene clearly those who flee to the people in front of a Japanese bombing attack in Nanjing under the protective umbrella of a swastika flag and remain spared because trust is not the pilots, the standard of to bombard allies. No matter who or what is beneath it. The man who is saving the idea with the flag is John Rabe, who is in the following weeks and months to an unsung hero and saved many thousands of civilians. This film tells his story and reminds us of a man who is still revered in China, while the Japanese government to this day about the true scale of the massacre in Nanjing during the Second ausschweigt Japanese-Chinese war.

Actually, John Rabe (Ulrich Tukur) to pack in those winter days of 1937, while the trunk. After more than 30 years as head of the Siemens office in the then Chinese capital of Nanjing, he is called back to Munich and to the management of the work of his successor, Werner Fliess (Mathias Herrmann) passed. The flawless turns out to be a Nazi and barely leave any doubt that the establishment will be concluded under its auspices – Raven finds himself deprived of his life’s work and is utterly shocked. Especially since the times are restless, since 7 July of rages of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Imperial Japanese troops have already occupied Shanghai and Nanjing are at the gates. As calculated during the farewell dinner for John Rabe Nanjing, the Japanese air force attacks and panic breaks out, the Siemensianer the only one who keeps the head cool. He opens the gates of the factory for the Chinese civilians who seek protection from the bombs, he has the brilliant idea with the (otherwise carefully packaged) swastika.

The next morning, advising the German-Jewish diplomat Dr. Rosen (Daniel Brühl), the leader of the girls’ school Valérie Dupre (Anne Consigny), the chief physician, Dr. Wilson (Steve Buscemi) and other foreigners, as one alleviate suffering of the people could. Rosen tells of the experiences of a protection zone in Shanghai, and calls for such a set up in Shanghai. Chairman of the facility is to be John Rabe, who as a German is a sort of ally of the invaders. Rabe initially rejected with regard to his dismissal, but decided at the last minute to do the job too. A decision that most directly brings him a great personal loss: For before Rabe’s eyes the ship on which he was supposed to leave at the Nanjing and now his wife (Dagmar Manzel) rides off alone, is bombed by Japanese planes and sank beneath the waves the Yangtze River. At first shocked focuses Rabe soon with his aides to set up the zone again and again risked his life …

Of course, one thinks of John Rabe and over again to another film that tells of a German in the turmoil of World War II civilians escaped with his life – the question is from Steven Spielberg’s film Schindler’s List. And indeed, the two films are similar, not only because of the actions of the protagonists, but also in other respects: Both Schindler as well as Raven were Party members of the NSDAP, both died after the war, poverty and loneliness and, at least in Germany fell largely into oblivion while they were revered in Israel and in China as a hero. And let the similarities are still continuing: the Talmudic saying, “Whoever saves one life saves the entire world” will take place in the two films mentioned. No wonder then that even the staging seeks united front with Steven Spielberg’s moving film, and perhaps most personal and therefore mimics the narratives of Hollywood. A company that succeeds only partly.

Is little or no lighting Rabe’s membership in the party. The film builds it from the outset as a counterpart to his successor, who believes in good faith and belief in the good side of Nazism and write begging letters to the leader, where he of the atrocities of Japanese troops against the Chinese, and reported to help asks. His Chinese subjects treated with almost fatherly solicitude Rabe, who even after tens of years, he tried in vain to teach the waiting. This has hardly anything from the behavior of a master race in itself, but acts much more like the affable authority of a patriarchal business leader. Also in the Men’s Club of NSDAP local group is – at least until the arrival of Rabe’s successor – to be very apolitical and almost cozy. No wonder then that it decreases Tukur the switch to the silent heroes of Nanking. But while it lacks the figure by a bit of tension and strife, acts Rabe – despite the loss of his wife – too flat and static. Here one could certainly get more from the figure.

Directorial ambition and partly by an astonishing level of the crowd scenes, it is mainly uncomfortable dramatising the music and the Sidekicks of the story, which are insignificant and unpleasant for to ensure that the film then it is rather long and somewhat tiresome works. The love story between the diplomats and the student roses Langshu (Zhang Jingchu) is completely unnecessary and would be well and happy to be omitted. The film, which has come with its 130 minutes too long, would have done so with security not diminish – on the contrary. But as the film loses its protagonists always out of sight and close to it is dangerous to become a stereotyped epic, the squint too much for the great examples from the U.S.. It’s quite possible that we will soon encounter the name Florian Gallenberger back on the canvas – as a director of a film made in Hollywood. ” The film at least partly acts as a sort Bewerrbungsschreiben for the major studios.

His cinematic monument to the “German living Buddha” (this title of honor have conceived for the Chinese, John Rabe) is solid, and staged some scenes really exciting and highly emotional film in widescreen format, which does not need to face similar productions from the U.S. to hide. Whether he is the person of John Rabe, however just, can also be divided. To the historical facts is little doubt that man is John Rabe, however, in spite of the diary entries, which is based on the work, little tangible. Perhaps yes, the film provides at least ensure that the man who saved the lives of the 200,000 Chinese people, even in this country experienced such a thing as a belated vindication. He would have earned) it shortly, no doubt.
