Golden Door

A-M-E-R-I-K-A! At the beginning of the 20th Century, this country has a very special sound: It is the Promised Land, the paradise, the land flowing with milk and honey. Especially in poor areas of Europe such as in Sicily, the legendary tales of potatoes covered as large as carriages, carrots as long as canoes and trees, which grow on gold coins on fertile ground. What if all these reports, however fantastic they seem, would it?

Lured by the enchanting stories from the distant land across the Atlantic Ocean also resolves the widowed Salvatore Mancuso (Vincenzo Amato), the step and dare to try his luck with his family in America. Together with his two sons, Angelo (Francesco Casisa) and Pietro (Filippo Pucillo), and his mother Donna Fortunata (Aurora Quattrocchi) are plated sparse all the family possessions to finance the costly trip. But emigration is not just take leave of material things – the Mancusos is hardly more than a little fine clothes, because they want to arrive dressed in their new home like princes – they must leave mainly from their previous habits. And it turns out quickly that the journey has to do on the narrow deck of a huge passenger ship, while with the child’s dreams of a carefree life in paradise too – it also changes the encounter with the mysterious, so not in this environment is perfect Englishwoman Lucy ( Charlotte Gainsbourg), nothing in the Salvatore love. And when the emigrants finally arriving at Ellis Iceland, standing before them, the hard and strange procedures, without which no one can be at home in America …

, the young Italian director Emanuele Crialese has only two feature films before Golden Door / Nuovomondo already has a firm place in his homeland secure. Once we were strangers, originated in 1997, and Lampedusa / Respiro of 2002 ensured at international festivals like the New York Film Festival and the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes for attention. Even with its now third feature film Golden Door / Nuovomondo born in 1965 in Sicily director was able to score points internationally, the visually stunning parable to bid farewell to the homeland and the beginning of a new world in 2006 was awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was for the European Film Award in the category “Best Director” nomination.

The movie content is divided into three parts: Beautiful to look at are primarily those sequences when Crialese follows the childishly naive faith of the Sicilians and fabulous pictures giant carrots, apples and huge lakes shows from milk, dreaming of where the poverty-stricken Mancusos. In abrupt contrast to the images are from the second part, which shows the crossing on the lower deck crammed with people of the ship. But it will get worse, because with the arrival in the U.S. procedure begins with a degrading medical examinations of the health and intelligence of the newcomers, cynical and misanthropic tearing families apart and all the sick, the stupid and the other way again Gehandicapten sent home. The inscription at the foot of the Statue of Liberty, the founding myth of the United States put into words, it is in this moving film is nothing more than a farce, “Give me your tired, your poor, your downtrodden masses, the desire to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your crowded coastlines and they send me, the homeless, are impelled by a storm, hold up \ ‘I am my light gold \’ nen !”
The Golden Gate, however, we learn from this film, was not open to everyone, but was for many a bottleneck through which there was no way through for them. That the film, despite this background, the earnest desire to dream, telling stories and great pictures watch anything else does not lose that counts undoubtedly to little miracles that bereithält the cinema again.
