Ararat

Rarely were already in the run-up as the critics agree on a movie about how the latest work of director Atom Egoyan: a “wonderful and important experience,” the Los Angeles Daily News called the film, Screen International called Ararat – the title of the film — as “a blessing for filmmakers.” After a long wait Ararat runs – certainly the most personal film of the Canadian master director – to finally in Germany.

At the Canadian border, the young Raffi (David Alpay) of the Customs officer David (Christopher Plummer) with film cans are made Turkey halted. Did he really brought back images of a film that is currently being filmed in Toronto? Or did he not rather his fingers in the drug trade? Intrigued, the old man wants to bring on the eve of retirement, eager to find out what has to be refinement hide …

The subsequent interrogation finally Raffi’s history reveals a kaleidoscope of love and hatred, accusations and lies, life before Background of the Turks of genocide against the Armenians last for the First World War. Without any apparent transitions and light as a feather, each interwoven narrative strands of the experiment, the inconceivable in other ways described process and make it tangible. First, there is the (actual number) the painter Arshile Gorky, who in an image processing the memories of his mother and brutally murdered during the genocide. On the other hand represented rotates also originally from Armenia (fictional) director Edward Saroyan (of which) is also coming from Armenia Franzöisch Chansonier Charles Aznavour a film with which he wants to lead the long-denied the genocide of his people in the world before our eyes – bizarrely, the Plant an epic in the style of Hollywood. The art historian Ani (Arsinée Khanjian), in turn, is an expert on Gorky’s work and advises the director in that capacity Saroyan. And her son Raffi is involved in the events, as an employee during the shooting, he tried to hold his video camera with its own version of genocide against the Armenians.

Despite the apparent complexity and seriousness of the plot is a wonderfully poetic Ararat , intelligent and sensual film about the difficulties of working up a collective trauma, which is for each of the parties to fate. This Egoyan avoids any assessment, but makes the motives of each party itself (which the perpetrators of the genocide as well) are visible as the various truths, contradictions and misinterpretations. Movies for the mind and the senses, and certainly one of the most remarkable films of the cinema still young year.
