A Thousand Years of Good Prayers

The Hong Kong-born and living in the U.S. film director Wayne Wang is this year’s retrospective of the Hof Film Festival (October 23 to 28 dedicated 2007). He will be a guest in the court and will present beside his two new films, The Princess of Nebraska, and Mr. Shi / A Thousand Years of Good Prayers another six, he selected films, including the legendary cult films Smoke and Blue in the Face (1995 ) and The Center Of The World (2001 ).

If this year does not create to court, has to wait at least until January 2008, to Wayne Wang terrific new film, Mr. Shi / A Thousand Years of Good Prayers will see regular in the German cinema to be. But worth the wait, as the 58-year-old director, has nominated his father after his favorite actor John Wayne, a wonderful, gentle, original film has achieved.

The films referred to is the focus of Mr. Shi ( Henry O), a widowed retiree from China, the visit after 12 years separating his only daughter Yilan, who lives in the U.S. (Faye Yu). Even at reunion at the airport two worlds collide: The traditional China and has the modern West, the Yilan long since absorbed into itself. She speaks not only fluent in English, but in her whole demeanor has long been the American. Which, of course it seems strange to her father, who would rather today than tomorrow, the Red zurückwünscht-Communist China, emphasizing old values.

Yilan, named after a city in China, is a very lonely woman withdrawn in a small settlement on the outskirts of the city alive. They would rather spend their evenings alone in the cinema and eager to meet the calls from Boris (Pasha Lychnikoff), the Russians, with whom she leads an unhappy affair. She is very quiet and almost mysterious when it comes to the issue of men’s and reacts very angry when her father that she always responds. Here clash not only different cultures but also two widely separated generations.

With Mr. Shi, who is based on a short story by Yiyun Li, Wayne Wang returns back to his Chinese roots. He immediately traveled to the United States twice, once to film and studied painting at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland and a second time in the early 1980s after he had spent some years in Hong Kong in radio. No wonder then that he was identified with Yilan, which the Chinese man returned to Beijing, while she remained in the United States.

Wang’s debut film, his college graduation film A Man, a Woman and a Killer (1975) . His second film, Chan is gone, he turned seven years later, based on the experiences he made as a social worker with young Asian immigrants in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Since then he has directed fifteen films in his homeland and the American election is now regarded as one of the key figures of American independent cinema.
